According to representatives, Holland America attracts more than 25,000 children and families aboard their 15 premium mid-size ships every year. Their cruises appeal to multi-generational groups and offer an extensive range of activities for children, teens and adults onboard and on-shore. Holland America has been among the highest-ranked cruise lines in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards and Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards. Interestingly, the cruise line has been named among the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” by Ethisphere Institute, a leading business ethics think-tank.
Tolerance and Diversity:
In addition to hosting gatherings for LGBT passengers on board, all employees who interact with passengers participate in a diversity training class. Holland America’s “Diversity at Work” class is led by onboard H.R. Managers and examines various generations, ethnicities and cultural identities, exploring how best communicate with each group. We were pleased that Holland America reps shared with us their support of the LGBTQ community through various sponsorships and support. These include:
- The Human Rights Campaign Dinner
- Taste of GSBA (Seattle LGBT Chamber)
- The LGBT Community Center in San Diego
- The Seattle Men’s Chorus/Seattle Women’s Chorus
- The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force in Miami
In recent years they’ve also sponsored the Seattle Pride Parade with employees participating in the parade.
All ships (except Prinsendam) offer activities at Club HAL for kids ages 3-17. Club HAL provides supervised, age-specific activities and games for those 3-12 (one area for 3-7 year olds and another for 8-12 year olds). And, The Loft is designed for teens 13-17. Most ships also feature The Oasis, a teens-only sun deck that connects via a special passageway to The Loft. Like many other ships, Holland America also offers babysitting on sea days and evenings.
Holland America also features a Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) program that invites passengers to take lessons and compete to become the “cruise champion.” They even offer special sailings with DWTS pros and celebrities (check website for details).
Popular summer sailings are in Europe and Alaska, popular “bucket list” destinations. In cooler months, their Caribbean sailings, as well as Hawaii and Mexico, sell best. See Holland America’s website for sailings to all the seven continents.
